Electrical Chatter / Fire siren project, relay help needed.
I'm a vol. emt and fire fighter, I have two identical sirens that I've been running paralell to each other with a dual throw toggle switch, I need to redo these.  I dont have room for the dual throw switches, theyre too bulky.  so I thought I'd try relays.  what I had in mind was, in the first pic. if they make such a thing, using a dual throw relay.  i'm not sure if this will work.

In the second set up, running two relays, one after the other, using the coil side of the relays in a bridged set up. power wire into relay 1 pos, thenfrom relay 1 neg. to relay 2 pos. then from relay 2 neg. back to the battery.

in the third,  I'm illistrating the idea of using one sirent to trigger the relay to start the other siren.

what do you guys think would be the easiest, what relays would you reccomend?

Electrical Tech / 86 bird w/289 wont hold charge????
my bird wont hold a charge, I've put a new alternator in it, with the battery charged up it'll run for a few minutes then die, and wont restart. I think the amp gage is stuck as well, does anyone have any idea what might be the problem???

Engine Tech / Finally got the transmission in, now for the engine...
Got to drive the bird around the parkinglot today, after a long long time.  I'm sure it needs some sort of fuel treatment, spark plugs, wires, rotor cap, etc. 

anything you guys think I should know about getting an older car thats been sitting a while running correctly?

my set up is an 85 T-bird turbocoupe, with a 65 289 HIPO/c4 auto implant, and as far as I know a factory rear end, I think its the 7.8 rear, I may be wrong.  it has headers with glass packs, not cat. converter. no a/c but I might put it back on. no power steering but would like to have that back. Other than all that, the car itself is stock.

I'm just curious what a reasonable fuel mileage expectation would be for this car with either a 2br. carb. or a 4 br. carb.

any ideas.

I need the weather stripping that goes around the bottom of my windows, does anyone know the best place to get them, or can I get them. lol

Drivetrain Tech / Thunderbird 5, team shameless 0 - need advice.
Ok, so we've been trying to get this bird running. The motor sounds great, but we've been battling with the transmission.

A friend gave me his transmission out of a wrecked bird.  its also a c4, I found out it is indeed a c4.  tried the bell housing that came with it (shorter) it seemed too tight, even before bolting things down.  Tried my newer, deeper bell, and I cant get anything out of the transmission.  The wheels start to spin for about 3 seconds and then quit.  A friend told me that the 66 289's are different than todays. (I dunno)  He said that the torque converters were different and that the outer/male shafts were longer than they are now.  so far I'm throwing the B.S. flags on this, but, he knows more about these things than I do so who knows. 


I do have a few questions.

(1) are the flex plates any different in dish depth, I know width, tooth ratio, and weights are different.

(2) is there any such thing as different lengthed torque converter shafts.

(3) if both answers to 1 and 2 are no, can somebody please confirm what size bell I need for this thing.  I'm getting kinda tired of pulling it out, and re-installing it. lol

I dont have anything against mopars, I just hope I can keep up or out run my brothers 440 cuda. lol 

His: 68 cuda 440 cid. auto, (roughly 500-600hp.)
Mine: 86 TC, 289 cid auto, (I've been told by the guys over at sbf forum that I can hit 400+ hp.)

If I can wind it up high enough, I should be able to stay right there with him, shouldnt I? Theres a BIG weight difference between us.  I've been told it will take a lot to get my car to hold up to that kind of HP though, what do you guys think?

tried to tell me that 10 seconds in a quarter wasnt very fast, and that they break that all the time on pinks.  what an idiot!!!  I tried to tell him, that they may show them breaking 10 seconds in a quarter, but theyre also only showing 32 cars, out of a few hundred!

some people arent worth waisting my oxegen on. lol

Drivetrain Tech / speedo?
I'm curious, my c4 has a spot where, what looks like, the speedo cable goes, and two wires.  My car doesnt have the speedo cable, but both wires are there.

Are the TC speedo's electronic, or is there supposed to be a cable.

If theyre electronic, are those two wires the speedo wires, or, are they the nuetral safety switch and reverse switch?

It didnt look like it would take a cable, it just looks like its plugged off and the wires are what drives the speedo.

I wish I had a pic. of it to show you, so you can see what I'm talking about.

Body/Appearance/Interior / interior colors?!?
I'm curious, is there a way of painting or staining my dark blue interior some other color, such as light grey?

I dont much care for the 80's auto interior stylings, (carpet trim around plastics)

I'm thinking of taking the carpet panels off my doors and replacing them with something different, but I'd like to take my armrest, panels, and speaker covers and make them another color. If I do this, I'll be doing the entire car. but its a start. lol

Engine Tech / crate engines, why is it....
why is it, I hear so many people are getting, much more horsepower out of their engines, than the manufacturers of these crate engines are claming to have?

are these engines hopped up more than what manufacturers are building, or is this just the max horse you can realy get out of them?

Has anyone ever done this, What I plan to do is.....

Since my car doesnt have the orig. motor, and I'm assuming that I dont need the instrument light cluster. so I'm thinking of taking it out completely.

(1) take out the light cluster from slot 4

(2) move the a/c-heat controls from 3 to 4

(3) move pocket from 1 to 3

(4) install a switch panel in slot 1



Can anyone think of any reason why this would not work, providing the wiring will reach to move them?  Or, will my current dash gauges not work without the instrument panel hooked up?

is there any way carfax can do a reverse search, and track down the current owner of one of my old cars? I'm interested in finding my old mustang, and seeing if the guy would be willing to sell it, but have no idea where it is. Dont know if its possible but figured I'd try it.

Drivetrain Tech / needing opinions on a c5 trans.
I currently have a 79 F150 4x4 longbed, 351m, auto. (gas guzzler) I also have an 86 thunderbird with 289hipo, c4 trans. but the trans. needs work.

A friend wants to trade me his 91 F150 inline 6, 5spd. and a spare c5 trans. (from a 79 mustang), for my 79 truck.

I'm curious, whats the difference between the c4 and c5 trans? what issues to look out for with the c5? I'm told its tougher than the c4, is this so? I'm also told it will bolt right up to my 289 and bolt right up to the bird, is that true as well?  Is the c5 a divorced bell housing trans. or is it all one piece? are any of the parts interchangeable between the c4 and c5 transmissions?

sorry for so many questions but I know, almost, absolutely nothing about transmissions.

Engine Tech / HP/Ft.lbs. expectancy from 289 hipo?
I may be asking for a good taunting. But I was wondering what the max performance expectancy would be on my 289 hipo.  with out a supercharger, with supercharger, should I even consider nos. Nos with supercharger, without?  wondering what your opinions would be.

I may be off my rocker, but I'd love to hit 400 rear wheel Hp. Even if it takes a supercharger to do so. (although I'd love to get close without help, it just isnt gonna happen. lol.)

I'm pretty green when it comes to knowing what to look at when it comes to building a motor, (I know whats in a motor, just not wich size cams, lifters, etc.)  Feel free to take me to school if you'd like. lol

I do know that statisticly, the HIPO's had 271hp from factory with a 4barrel carb. but I'm sure that was at the crank, not the wheels. According to Wikipedia, Carol Shelby got around 390 hp with a supercharger, could I get near 400 "rear wheel" hp. with nos, or am I just asking for trouble? lol
