Title: Searching for a shift cable
Post by: Dave G. on September 11, 2018, 12:09:43 PM
Shift cable broke on my 88 Cougar XR-7 back in June.  Apparently no one makes an OE part anymore and I've had zero luck locating any replacements or even a company that can make one.

Please advise if you know where to go to get new shift cables.  (3 months later and I still can't believe this part is so hard to source.)

Also looking for opinions as to the best shift kit to install.  I've come across a few different ones for sale.  Car is currently has the bone stock original AOD tranny.

Thanks,
Dave

Keep you eye out for a parts car.

May you have to buy a whole car just for a cable ?

Answer, Yes :hick:

Cool cats had a discussion on the mustang cable but I couldn't find the link.

They make new shift cables for same vintage mustang's, but don't think it interchanges with the Cougar...although seems like it should.  I'll look for that discussion.

I had 2 custom ebrake cables made by https://madisonpowersystems.com/

I thought the price was fairly reasonable, might be worth checking out.

That's interesting.  Did you send them a good cable to use as a pattern?

No, just drawings with lengths and what type of ends. They were for hooking Crown Vic ebrakes to the tbird ebrake system.

I have an 87 Sport with 5.0 and AOD that I have been trying to sell for a while with not much interest. If it doesn't sell by the end of this month it will likely become a parts car and then I will have the cable for sale.
