Engine Tech / Re: Help Please, Energy Drain
Bad diodes in the alternator can drain a battery overnight. That was my first guess but I thought you put a known good one on there.

I had an aftermarket radio go bad and put a parasitic drain on the system but it wasn't over a night.

That's something like 12-30W to kill it overnight.

You can get more precise by putting a multimeter with a 10A fused setting inline with the negative battery cable. Start systematically disconnecting stuff and see when the draw stops.

Misc Tech / Re: Radiator Caps
No idea what came on it originally. Specified pressure in my '87 FSM is 16 psi.

Looking at the Gates interchange page - https://ww2.gates.com/if/automotive/partslookup/Interchange/index.cfm - the RS-50 interchanges to 31527 and the RS-51/53/60 all interchange to 31528.

The 31527 has identical specifications to the 31528 except for the operating pressure.
31527 is 13 psi and
31528 is 16 psi.
Both will fit your car.

Lol. Of course Eric finds a friggin retrofit kit.

Toss the acspoogeulator and buy a new one. You don't want a 25+ year old desiccant bag.

Engine Tech / Re: 3.8L Mechanical Fuel Pump interchangeability ?
As best I can tell, to carburate a 99+ 3.8, you need an electric pump for fuel,  an intake, and a distributor. The balance shafts are red herrings.

You can get an intake from SuperSixMotorsports or Tom Morana.

The 99+ 3.8s don't have a distributor, but still use a cam position sensor that uses the same spot as the distributor in older motors that sits in the timing cover.

The timing cover gasket interchanges between '94-'04, so I'd guess the interface between the timing cover and cam stayed the same. You may be able to use a carb'd distributor. You'd have to get your hands on a '99+ camshaft synchronizer to confirm the dimensions.

SuperSixMotorsports and Tom Morana both have EFI-to-Carb kits for the 3.8. I'd just ask them what the deal is and if you could use your own distributor if theirs is too expensive for your blood.

RWD, Yes. None of them have balance shafts. The article I linked (I have no personal knowledge) says the unfinished balance shaft bores exist without oiling holes.

Maybe? However, I think you'd need to cap the oil passages for the balance shaft.

What exactly are you trying to do?

How long the actuating eccentric stayed on the cam shaft is another question.
On Rockauto, my '87 cam doesn't cross reference back to '83. Per Babpen 15s:

The cam thrust button was replaced by a half-moon thrust plate as a running change very early in 1984, so there were two drilled pads added to the front of the block to accommodate the change. Look for an E4AE casting.

It sorta looks like the '87 cam has a pump eccentric on it...

Here's an article that goes into various parts on the engine that changed over the years:

The FS6 mounting ears are slightly further apart, so you'll have to slot the rear mounting bracket, at least I had to:

Probably depends on the manufacturer. Mine (circa 2005) fit like a glove.

I had to grind a mount on a compressor for my '87 D150  recently because the casting had changed from factory. I'm guessing that's what happened on your FS6. The manufacturers don't have any institutional knowledge for the reasonings behind the original dimensions and change them because they are unaware of all of the application interfaces.

Either would be fine. The FS6 would give you a little better performance heat soaked at idle, the 6P148A would give you a little lower vent temp while driving. Although I think it's a moot point now, looks like Rockauto/Autozone are only offering FS6 compressors now.
