everything works fine but i am getting to the point that programs cant work on XP SP1,, even google chrome.
this thing is really old,, so old i had to turn off auto updates about 5years ago becaues the updates were causing problems.
Malwarebytes is also starting to look at me kinda funny, tried an update and one of the files was rejected for some reason.
Clamwin is the same and so is CCleaner.
I am thinking that my current browser firefox is glitchy as well
the darn thing is running really slow in between accessing my docs and opening another doc or opening a web browser ect,, it never was like this a few years ago or even last year (2011).
I defraged today as well as removed some unused programs , thougth that would help.
Hell, even the latest Java cant run on this machine.
I had to buy a new pc this past winter, I went from a XP-converted-to-Win7 machine to a brand spankin' new 64 bit Win 7 box, and have loved it. No issues whatsoever. I've also beefed up the ram to the max (16 g), added 2 more HDDs, and a monster power supply and graphics. Those in the gaming/pc modding realm will know what I mean when I say it runs Skyrim with everything set as high as it can go. Oblivion, same thing.
All this from an HP that came from wal mart for 700 bucks (the 400 or so spent since then on the upgrades notwithstanding).
The latest java is buggy on both of my win 7 machines, and as far as mozilla, have you installed the latest version?
Of course, Macro$uck hasn't had any support for XP for the past 4-5 years now. Win 7 is pretty well similar to XP, only w/o the buggy bullshiznit that was Vista. I tinkered around with Win 8 on a friend's lappy the other day....oh hell no. I'll stay with 7 till it's went the way of dear old XP.
Coming from someone who has suffered Win ME AND 2000, I can say that Win 98, XP, and 7 will be what billy gates and crew will be immortalized for...
I'm still using a powerMac with a Powerpc processor...I havent had support or updates since 2005... and its still blazing fast and still runs everything...just realized my network switch is only a 10-100, so I guess I need to update that...I could easily get another 5 years out of this thing I think
i guess it was a month or so ago, maybe a couple, microshaft announced they are not supporting ((((***ANYTHING***)))) in the past in order to put all thier efforts on win8.
personally, i think there is a certain degree of my own personal security running something hackers are not interested in ,, reverse psycology so to speak. I honestly could not break win95 or 97,
when this thing boots it says copy right 1985-2000...something like that.
Im considering building a pc which would make the house here consist of a few dummy terminals,, the pc itself would be basically all things home management with entertainment and the like.
the downside to all this is that i know good and well, that "just because of software" i might have to start throwing stuff away more often. TV's are going that route,, already seeing it. stuff will become trash more often because stuff is designed to have "X" amount of startup's then it self distructs.

As much as I love old cars and old video games, old computers just aren't worth hanging onto. You could build yourself a nice PC with Windows 7 that would blow that computer out of the water for under 400 bucks. As for the RAM, I have a few sticks you can have for nothing, just verify what type you have. I'd assume DDR1 (one notch), but you might have DIMM RAM on a computer that old (2 notches).
I might have a couple sticks as well, more than welcome to them if they'll work. I'll check 'em out when I get home and post the type and size when I get home.
I'll understand where you are coming from J, but the fact is that most people have plenty of computing power for what they do most often, e.g. browse the internet, email and some word processing. A much smaller percentage use a bit more computing power by watching videos online or similar stuff. The marketing folks do their best convince us that we can't live without being able to do whatever the latest dumb thing is... so we NEED a new computer AND updated software to do it. Being stupid, some of us pay through the nose to buy the latest and greatest hardware, sometimes paying far more than we can afford, only to discover that the latest new feature doesn't work well, the hardware seems to be getting worse and the venders of both the hardware and the software sit around pointing fingers at each other...
I'll stick with my iMac built in late 2007 until she literally dies or won't do what I need her to do anymore. She is still fast, runs windows, linux and unix extremely well in virtual machines (I have enough memory to run 5 at the same time), is pretty energy efficient, all while being very quiet and remaining cool... of course the best part is that she is paid for. I have replaced the hard drive once in five years... but to be fair, she runs 24/7 and is not just used to browse the web or send email either.
At my house, I have 2 windows 98 computers, and probably 10-12 xp computers still running.
Ditch firefox and go to google chrome, and you will need to update past sp1 on xp to use anything handy.
512mb of ram would make that a new computer, considering windows takes 150mb or so just to fun.
I would clear your tsr's, get rid of your antivirus software, and if possible, reformat/reinstall a fresh instal of windows xp. Update only the newest service pack available, install only the programs you need and get 512mb-1 gig of ram. I am also guessing a celeron? P3's sucked. Go p2, or p4. Everthing inbetween was kinda garbage.
Nothing wrong with old computers if you keep them clean and running well.
You are absolutely right. I have two Compaq 486/66MT's running freebsd for my front end email servers, 3 Compaq DeskPro 200's for Domain Controllers (Windows 2003), 1 Compaq PROLIANT 1600 as my Exchange Server (Windows 2003), 12 Dell 2650's and 12 Dell 1750's as my main development machines. I'll likely upgrade some of these over the next year or two if only to support my ongoing development efforts. Otherwise, unless there is a catastrophic failure or I can no longer obtain parts or make repairs, I'll use them until the fall apart. ;)
