I'm looking for an 87-88 Thunderbird headliner. I don't care if the fabric is bad as I'll be recovering it. I need an intact, straight board. I have a project in mind and a need a spare board, so I don't screw up the one in my car if it doesn't work how I want. Shipping and keeping the board from bending might be an issue but the local sources have kinda dried up.
I wish you were near. I have a really nice blue one in the garage
Shipping would be stupid expensive/impractical most likely. The biggest issue would be keeping the headliner from bending in shipping.
Still looking :)
we should just make these things from Masonite board,, do it once and never need to touch it again.
ill be doing a conversion from red cloth 87,,, to black "something" light weight.
i laughed about your shipping comment btw,,, im like yeah,, no doubt
It would have to be bent to match the stock board, and also have recesses for the sun visors.
yeah,, kinda.. only on certain years though..
i know my prior 2 84 models did not have that sun visor provision.
Still looking? I'm about to pull the headliner out of my cougar if you want to make a bit of a trip for it I'm sure we could work something out.
Unfortunately that won't work, being that Thunderbird and Cougar have different rear roof treatments.
Ah I thought they were the same. Sorry, man good luck
No problem. I'll find one eventually.
Still looking. There hasn't been an 87-88 Thunderbird in the junkyards near me in over a year.
I made a backer out of 1/8" ABS plastic for one of my cars. The only issue is needing a pattern to copy.
Where are you located? Not in your profile.
Fixed it. I thought I had updated it with the new forum but I missed it.
Have you tried posting a wanted ad in Craig's List? What about calling local auto recyclers? By local I mean down around Peotone, Kankakee, or Joliet. I put a pipeline in the ground in that area a few years ago and thought I saw a couple salvage yards but then again might have been one of the farmers personal collections. I say that jokingly but my uncle was a farmer and as a young kid I thought he also had a salvage yard business.
I've looked around the state and NW Indiana but these cars are thin on the ground up here, with salt/rust and all. Hence why I've been searching for a bit.
I've got a parts car right now. Once I get to the point of taking it apart, I may see how it does just trying to roll it up. If it worked, then it wouldn't be so difficult to ship. Or, you could just drive down here to Virginny and pick it up. :)
The headliner board is stiff. If your try and roll the board it will just crack and flake apart.
I'll be in Atlanta next weekend. You think Southwest will allow me to put a headliner in the overhead bin?
So what exactly prevents an '87/'88 headliner from fitting in an '83/'86? The rooflines didn't change that much, did they? I can see the overall length of the '87/'88 being a little longer, but it seems like you could trim that to fit. Just curious. Thanks.
Not surprisingly still looking :toothless:
A month later. Still looking.....
Still looking for a headliner. In 2020. Going on a year and a half now.
Just hop in your car and drive down here to Virginia and get one. Easy peasey!

Worth a call if you've been looking this long.....
I'll get right on that :grinno:
Too bad there wasn't a way to ship the thing without it costing $200.
I bet they just have the material, not the backing board. I really want the backing board. I have a project I want to try and I don't want to screw up my headliner board if it doesn't work.
