Title: 1997 Called, they want their car back...... my 1986 T-bird build

Yep, that's me. Summer of 1998 and the start of my senior year. My dad and I bought it in early winter of 97, in the rain, at a body shop. It was red and shiney and had a 5.0. Perfect first car right? I spent just over a year with the car when my parents (who were loaning me money for repairs; ie 7.5 rear end, one 5.0, and one AOD) decided I needed something more reliable and newer that didn't stall at red lights (*^$#*@*&@ CFI!!!!) So I was forced to sell the beauty you see here and bought a 93 Mustang LX. Forced you say, but its a Mustang a fox body Mustang how could I be forced? Two Point Three. The exact amount of liters the 85 hp POS 4 cylinder displaced. Don't let the 8 spark plugs fool you, there is no power there.

After mulling my way through about 14 Mustangs over the years I found myself wanting to go back and build the car that built me. But better, and more awesome, and faster, and something that doesn't stall at red lights, and leaves TWO black marks when you nail it from a stop. I browse Craigslist daily, sometimes hourly looking for deals. I found 2-3 cars that didn't pan out over the last few years which made me want one even more. I posted a WTB ad here and was contacted by My10-80 about a parts car he had. We put the deal together, I got a trailer and a friend with a truck, and now its mine.

Here's the thread where the previous owner to My10-80 was selling it:
http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?33784-86-thunderbird-for-sale-also-84-elan-edition-parts-car

And as it sits now in my garage:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/3AC8C388-3993-4F5E-977D-F9FA111930C4_zpsvkzr3nuc.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/3AC8C388-3993-4F5E-977D-F9FA111930C4_zpsvkzr3nuc.jpg.html)

As of now I'm trying to decide if the effort of making a SN95 dash work in the car is worth it. I don't have fenders, or a dash frame, or a dash from a Thunderbird but I do have the dash, frame, column, and pedals from a SN95. Here's a mock up of the SN95 frame in the car:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/DD8A60EB-4EEE-49FE-89D5-6783BFCBC0F1_zpsl0fultgv.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/DD8A60EB-4EEE-49FE-89D5-6783BFCBC0F1_zpsl0fultgv.jpg.html)

I'm a perfectionist. Its a disease really, not a character trait. If I'm going to do this the right way, the firewall is going to need surgery and I'm going to spend alot of one on one time with a SN95 at the junkyard holding a Sawsall. I have found an 86 in a junkyard about 65 miles from me, but $100 each for fenders and $200 for the dash seems high when I can get the parts for less than half the next time one rolls into the Pull a Part 10 miles from my house.

So thats where I'm at for now. I'll be updating as I go, and maybe within a year or so this will be on the ground and moving under its own power again.

Take it from me, doing it once, and doing it right, is one hell of a lot better than going back and redoing it 2 or 3 times.

I've changed my mind so many times on my own project(s), that it's caused me to waste a lot of time. Of course, I can't stay focused on it too long either, unless I'm medicated, and I can't stand what that does to me. But it does make for an interesting collection of stuff for when I do get around to working on it again, which will be when warmer weather comes this way. I can't handle the cold any more, it's barely 11 right now....was up to 55 yesterday.

Add carpet, and a floor shift, and my interior looks rather like yours, except there's no SN95 dash frame in there. Don't forget a new FORD heater core before you have it all back together, too. ;)

Look forward to seeing the build

The frame seems like a ok fit

This build will be on par in quality with a restoration of a 91 Coupe I did several years ago. The car was complete minus paint, but I touched every inch in one way or another. 158 pics of the progress can be seen here: http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/slideshow/91%20Coupe%20Build My garage is heated and cooled so the temps and weather do not slow me down. Something I did not have the pleasure of owning while building that Coupe. Its going to be slow and methodical with every part planned and touched before I check it off as done. Speaking of that, I need to get a whiteboard from the store.

The frame fits pretty good actually. I need to fab a couple of frame extensions and possibly notch the frame to clear the pedal box but that will possibly change with the addition of the SN95 pedal assembly.

Thanks. It was a basket case when I got it, 2 months later the clutch cable broke under full tension and sliced the main harness under the dash. No feeling like standing on the sidelines and watching flames roll out of the dash and onto the headliner. It was a long hard process of teardown and dealing with the insurance company and then the state to bring it back to a point where it could be registered.

As if Ford didn't have enough problem with fire anyway, then a freak accident happening like and causing a fire to boot. Always carry an extinguisher...always. ALWAYS. One of mine burnt a bit too.

I'm considering putting an SN95 dash in the '84 notch I have...it's a shell, minus the front suspension, and rear control arms. It's way clean, and straight, only a tiny little spot on the bottom that i found when I put the rear arms in. I stopped then and will wait till warm(er) weather so I can tackle the rust and stuff. Might put something on the bottom like spray on bed liner or something.

If you would, I'd like to see a few pics of your dash work-in-progress...it may just get me to locate a good dash and swap into mine. I've actually thought about putting a mod motor in it, too. Future plans and dreams and thoughts. Need a donor car for all that...I'm not going to piece all THAT together here and there lol.

There are a ton of threads out there for the SN95 dash swap into a Fox Mustang. I know how different it will look, and I've always liked the SN95 dashes more than any fox I've been in. Everything is much more ergonomic and looks like the older 50's Thunderbird. I pulled the dash out of the attic of the garage and started cleaning it up. I don't like rust anywhere and much like the 91 coupe I'll be sanding, etch priming, and painting the dash frame.

The pad is from a 2000 GT. I'm not sure if I'll keep it or go to a 94-97 pad with the clock pod.

Since you already have the dash (which isn't really that expensive but doesn't matter!) go for a full SN95 swap with instruments and all! That's my opinion :)

That is the direction I am leaning. Its going to require some work, but at this point I have no deadlines to reach.

I'm currently researching various insulation products to quiet down the interior a bit. I'm not looking for Caddy or Lincoln quiet but I'd like to have reduced road noise and no vibrations. I've used a peel and stick waterproofing product in the past with good success and on the 91 Coupe I used a lightweight product called Reflectix. I'm going to use a mixture of these and another insulation from Frost King to cover as much of the sheet metal as possible inside.

Just got an alert that the local Pull A Part got a 87 T-bird in. The SN95 dash might be put on hold if the dash in that car is decent. I did get out to the garage last night with my boys and start pulling up the old sound underlayment. It was cracked and broken in spots and I'm sure is way past the useful life date.

I see your car was originally the same color as mine!
The color I have on my car was suppose to be original color, but further inspection shown that it's way more raspberry red with hints of pearl in it.
Which imo, is even better!

Yes my car was originally red with a V6 and automatic. I'm unsure what color I'm going to paint it at this point. The graphics on the trunk and hood need to go and there are some light scratches and one decent chip in the black paint. I need to find some fenders and some molding before I even begin body color plans.

Just thought you might be interested, the interior of that car is from a 83/84 Elan/Heritage.  Thats the deluxe interior with the T-Bird logos in the seat backs.  That was 83/84 only.  I wonder if your car is not a 84, as the steering wheel and emblem appear to be from a 84 as well.

Although.....the turn signal stalk on the left of the wheel is a from a 85/86.....hmmmm....

Boyd Coddington Billet Wheels on Goodyear Aquatread tires. The car I'm building now is not the same car in the pic, that one was sold and long gone according to a VIN search.

The VIN and title show 86. Its possible they were swapped at some point as I don't know the history of the car. I will most likey not be using the seats and if I can find black interior panels I will gladly make someone a deal on all of it.

I'm going Sunday to the Pull A Part and I'll make the final decision while I'm there. If the 87 Dash looks ok, then I'll go with it. If not I'll be pulling everything from a SN95 to do the swap.

Well I got to PAP this morning, walking through the isles looking for a 87 Thunderbird. I found it, and I'm kinda pissed it was there.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/30E7D7D0-F658-42EE-98CB-E32F734B3C0C_zpsmql7f9qf.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/30E7D7D0-F658-42EE-98CB-E32F734B3C0C_zpsmql7f9qf.jpg.html)

Someone got the trans out but was otherwise untouched. I got the dash, frame, cluster, and a few small parts I was needing. On my way out I passed a 99 GMC Sierra with this under the hood:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/DDF25AA0-6D40-4CC7-8578-E4D0CC11D562_zpszfwsyexa.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/DDF25AA0-6D40-4CC7-8578-E4D0CC11D562_zpszfwsyexa.jpg.html)

Thats a 5.3 LS1 engine. If I had more time, I would have pulled it but I was on my way to go look at this:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/ABB0D99E-257E-4EFF-A040-4EDDA2866F2E_zps2ouhvjof.png) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/ABB0D99E-257E-4EFF-A040-4EDDA2866F2E_zps2ouhvjof.png.html)

Its a 86 GT with T-tops, needs a decent amount of work but fairly good condition. This will be my driver while the T-bird is rebuilt.

And that's a mighty sad TC :(

It's worth it to pull those 5.3's to just sell ...... People eat them up

I'm hoping to go back this coming weekend to grab it. I also passed up a few SN95's that I'd like to grab the spindles and rear brakes from. The stang is going to need some work as its basically a roller with a carb'd engine that runs. I'm going back to EFI and swapping to an AOD so the wife can enjoy it too.

Some of the stuff is okay, the tabs on the system sentury are broken. I did get the storage cup and the column trim along with a bin that drops into the console under the arm rest.

I'm going to attempt to save the 86 dash / underhood harness so I got it pulled out.
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/D7A2173F-4AF1-41D0-84D8-C9A7FAD84D3F_zpsq10oukx5.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/D7A2173F-4AF1-41D0-84D8-C9A7FAD84D3F_zpsq10oukx5.jpg.html)

I also started tearing down the dash to repair the pad or ad a cap:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/F6F73259-E048-4FFB-BFE4-734E0BC2DFC5_zpscl7cohnu.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/F6F73259-E048-4FFB-BFE4-734E0BC2DFC5_zpscl7cohnu.jpg.html)

Took all this stuff out:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/50753B3D-7CFA-4D37-A5DF-3388B3D3CB0B_zpsgi8xgixv.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/Durty%20Souf%20Skunk%20Worx/50753B3D-7CFA-4D37-A5DF-3388B3D3CB0B_zpsgi8xgixv.jpg.html)

I pulled apart the column shifter, looks like I'm going to need a turn signal switch as mine is broken. The plan is to sit down and go through the dash harness and figure out what I'm going to use. I want to strip it down to the bare minimum; lights, wipers, horn, HVAC, entertainment, stuff like that. No need for the system sentury wiring or auto lights or any other luxury add ons. Once I get that all figured out then I can start the repair process.

I'm going to repair the foam and recover the dash in black vinyl. I have to fix a few places that were cracked and a couple of edges I messed up while removing the old covering. Now is the time to decide if I want any custom touches to the dash, like removing the hole for the light sensor, or adding a gauge pod, etc. Any ideas?

Pulled out the ECU and wiring since it won't be reused.

Went by the junk yards today and picked up a few things.

Did some running this morning to pick up supplies for today's work. I also picked up the caliper brackets for the front 5 lug swap. I'm going to fill the holes and damage in the pad on the dash with great stuff expanding foam, then sand and mold it down to the right level.

Hey Drew, don't know if this is even close to you or not, but might not be a bad idea for you to check out.  Sounds like he'd take as little as $300 for the complete car.    No pics are there but thought of you when I saw this.

It shows as sold now. I found an 86 in a junkyard about an hour away from me but they want 100 for each fender. As soon as our weather improves enough to make a road trip I'll ride up and see what I'm dealing with.

Yeah, all the body panels are in good shape and the 2.3 and turbo are still there. The snowflake rims are still there too. I just made a thread on LM.net about the car, getting good responses so far.

Cool.
Those 87-88 TC electric front struts are keepers. Best drag struts I have used yet.
That car is the same color as my 87 TC.

And I started working on the wiring. The more I look at repairing the harness the less likey I'm going to be to reuse it. I have done Painless style harnesses in 5-6 cars and they are much easier to work with than this rat's nest. I'm going to pick up something in the near future and I'll update when I do.

That stuff is chipping and coming up pretty easy so they are having a blast with it. I had to move the car outside this morning to help a friend with his WRX and while we were working I got a text from the previous owner of the Mustang and we should be able to pick it up next weekend. I decided to cover the T-bird up and leave it outside for now. It started to snow and had 1/2" on it and inside already.

A few years ago I had a really sweet Marauder. Super charged, long tube headers, ported heads and blower, 18 psi, stall and 4.10's. I sold it after it went through the trans about 5000 miles after a rebuild thanks to a horrible tuner. I wasn't working and didn't want it sitting around collecting dust and making payments. A friend of mine bought a Silver 03 with high miles a few months back and used it as a daily driver until he got a 08 WRX last week. He's offered it to me for a steal and I'm going to take it on as well.

In the mean time, I'll be working on the dash and cleaning the garage this week. I'll post some pics of the progress on the dash.

I had to push the car outside to help a friend with his car and the weather finally broke so I could bring the 86 Mustang GT home on Saturday. After looking it over in the garage I have found some rust I need to address ASAP before the car goes back on the road this spring. So this is what I'll be working on for the next few months:
(http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/Drewstang/86%20GT%20T-Top/02535670-0CAF-4F23-88F6-7A56DF5E0D94_zpsmdoa7eqn.jpg) (http://s5.photobucket.com/user/Drewstang/media/86%20GT%20T-Top/02535670-0CAF-4F23-88F6-7A56DF5E0D94_zpsmdoa7eqn.jpg.html)

I'm still gathering parts for the T-bird and after the Mustang is rolling under its own power again I have to fix the timing chains on my 04 Marauder:

Hey sorry about the wiring being a rats nest on that car. When my dad had it I took a lot of the plugs for my 88 along with the dash. Hope it goes well for ya though. Say I originally was ganna buy that car from him after I came back from basic and drop a 460 In it. But then I fell in love with the turbo coupes. But keep up the good work.

Its not that big of a deal. I'm going to replace the wiring with a painless style harness to eliminate some of the things I will no longer use. I jokingly call it my street rod project because on top of the painless harness I'm thinking of using a Vintage Air A/C setup to clean up the engine bay.

well keep up the good work. but maken it a rat rod would be sweet, put in a blown 302 or a 427 cobra jet. side pipes. Now that would be sweet.

Yeah I got the Merc fixed and just sold it a couple weeks ago to fund the 92 Coupe. The coupe is Vermillion Red and was an auto 2.3 car. I've got all the parts to do the 5.0 swap plus the engine from the 86 GT. I actually just bought another car last night a 91 5.0 LX Hatchback. I'm still gathering parts here and there for the Thunderbird and I promise I'll get back on it as soon as I can.

The cutting apart of the 86 GT rust bucket has begun, it will donate a quarter panel and some other small patch panels to the 91 Hatchback. I found a local guy parting out a 86 T-bird and we've struck a deal for alot of the parts I need. Once the 91 Hatch is running and driving the coupe may get put on the back burner to make way for the T-bird build. I've been thinking my way through this and the SN95 dash and console swap needs to be done. I'm going to move the mirror and window switches while I'm at it. Also the stock HVAC  is going away for a Vintage Air setup. Its just like I tell my friends, this T-bird is my Street Rod lol.

Still slowly moving along. I sed the 86 Mustang, it was too far gone. The 91 Hatch will be going to the body shop after the holidays, the 92 Coupe is getting sidelined for a Coyote swap, and I bought a 86 TC from COLD. I'm slowly gathering parts for this project which I've named SR86.

A little update on this project. We have a neighbor causing problems and I've moved my 91 Hatch and this 86 to a friend's house for the winter while I make some room here. I did empty all the parts out before the move and I'd like to make a little bit of progress. I started a thread about it over on pro-touring.com which is dominated by old Camaros, Firebirds, and Mustangs. There are some oddball projects and this is one of them lol.

One of the things I'd like to do is bring the lighting into the 21st century. LED's all the way around including the headlights. I started working on a set of tail lights to remove the difuser from the inside of the lens to make it look updated. I also know from experience the sealant that holds the lens on will fail so this is a good time to replace it.

Difuser out, but not in one piece.

I already like where this is going

The plan is to add LED light boards to the housing so I'm not concerned with the "reflective" part of the housing. I do want to smooth out the textured part above the lens so I started with 220 grit sand paper to remove the grain.

Added some primer and saw I have a few low areas to work on.

While that was drying I wanted to polish the lens and remove the casting numbers and mold lines and get them ready for a tinted clearcoat.

Taped off the emblem

I used a 3m 500 grit 3" disc on a cordless drill. I quickly found a low spot in the lens.

And I got it smoothed out.

Next step is to hit it with 800 grit, then clear with some slightly tinted clear coat.

Thanks man. I just sent the email with pics to the LED board builder so we'll see what that will run me. I'm going to try to knock out some of this small stuff before the body gets back here. I actually need to make another JY run to grab another SN95 dash. I've decided to go that direction and remove the heater box, firewall, and steering column from a SN95 with some custom touches. I might side track the heater box for a vintage air setup, but we'll see what the budget looks like.

I think doing the interior like your planning will be nice.
my son, I and jandmustangs were contemplating the options out there to do the dash upgrade, this is something my son wants to do after our build & paint is done.

I like Mkvii interiors as well as sn95 way better than our interiors.
I seriously ***HATE*** the stupid center arm rest floating console,, I think its just plain ugly.  I like the sport/xr7 centers way better,, like was standard in the 84 models

I want to update the interior more than anything just because I hate the window switches on the console. I daily drove on of these for nearly two years and it bugged me so bad. The SN95 dash flows better and has better ergonomics. For me, it fits the theme of the "jet fighter" pen 15pit too. I'm going to add alot of details to the dash, passenger airbag area, and console.

Thats one of the reasons I want a painless harness as well. I'm not going to use most of the luxury features these cars had (trip comp, oil useage, etc) and I want to do away with the unneeded  lol. I've been watching your build thread as well and taking some notes myself. I'm fully expecting this car to be near $20-25k in parts by the time I'm done. This is going to take a long time unless I win the lottery lol.

I've been working on the tail lights on and off today, I have a few pics to upload and I'll post later.

I haven't forgot about this thread, its just been a busy year. I purchased a 1991 Mustang SSP back in May and I'm still picking away at the red Mustang coupe in the back ground of some of these pics. I went by my friend's house where the car is stored yesterday and made sure its good for this fall. I'm hoping to get it home soon and some friends have been talking about renting a shop and splitting the cost. If so, it will at least get closer to home and maybe a little work here and there. Sorry for the anti-climatic update but at least it hasn't been forgotten or sped.
