'84 HO Questions

Ok heres the run down. I have an '84HO sitting in my garage that I want to build up. I know it is flat tappet and has shatty e4 heads, but what about the rotating parts? What type of pistons, rods, and crank? Would it be worth building up a bit? Only reason I ask is my Ranger needs a new engine and I need something to do.

Just build it then.  Do what you can with what you have and don't worry too much about what's "best".
It might be a bit down on power from a similarly-built roller block, but the Ranger is lighter and traction-limited anyway.

Didnt think the flat tappet motors were considered HO's.

There is alot to consider when picking out parts.  DD, strip, spay, SC,  A little more infor would be helpful.

They were "HO"s at the time.  My 2bbl '82 5.0 Mustang was an "HO"......

what chuck said, you can probley surf ebay and pick up some stang left overs that nobody but us wants and get some more power out of it cheaper. it sounds like your ranger is just a daily driver or beater truck so i wouldnt go nuts building a motor for it. personaly the farthest i'd go is haveing it rebuilt for efi. cheap set of e7's some stock mustang headers, and those efi intakes are a dime a dozzen.

The truck was just something I got off my bro-inlaw for free cause he wanted it gone, so its not a dd or anything.

Wasnt planning on going nuts with it. Just mild cam, better heads and a decent carb setup. Was curious about what type of pistons it had and if it had forged internals or not, just in case I decided to go nuts on it.:hick: Was originally gonna do a 2.3T but I couldnt find a donor for cheap and I already had the 5.0

The engine came out of an 84 LTD with the police pakage. Probably has no more power than your average CFI car.
