Dexron II = Type H. I don't know if you can still find Dexron II, but Dexron III or IV should work. DON'T use Dexron V!

From the 84 shop manual:
C3 and AOD use Dexron II
C5 use type H.
"The fluid used in C5 A/T contains a detergent that retains particles in suspension that are generated during normal transmission use."

You are right, Type H is no longer available. Mercon replaces it.

I posted the info from the shop manual incase someone was curious about the difference between Dexron II and Type H.
I would use Dexron II, Mercon or Mercon V.
But I'm no trans expert. If they say one replaces the other, I believe them.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

Type f usually provides the snappiest shifts but Mercon will work fine.Mercon V i a synthetic i believe and a no-no in a used unit.
