Mustang diff & drum brakes...

Anyone know if the mustang drum brake mounts are the same as the T-bird/Cougar?

The reason I ask is I'm sitting here looking at a drum to disc conversion kit for a mustang and I'm wondering if it will fit on my cat.

I'm not sure. I've thought about it but never pursued it. I've always just hear of swapping an newer stang rear or even a T/c. I'm intrested to see what you find. I'd think no though, as stangs axels are diffent sizes IIRC

The main reasons I'm looking at this kit is that it has 10.5" discs instead of 10s and no ABS  to deal with. Also the kit includes all the lines (stainless braided) and all the hardware to do the swap. And I don't have to swap rear ends.

A big bonus. as a guess I'd say no, just because I stand by that IIRC, the axels are different for stang and Bird/cougar. You could get the axels from a ranger and areostar then use the kit in that. Sell the new axels from the kit on corral or something.

I'm quite sure the Cougar backing plates and drums are different than Mustang ones. If you had a TC 8.8" housing you could do it by using Mustang axles (because the TC housing is the same length as Mustangs).

Seriously, swapping in an entire TC 8.8" with disc brakes already installed would probably be easier than doing a disc brake conversion on an existing axle. Four control arm bolts, the shocks (& quad shocks, if equipped), the driveshaft, the brake cables and the flex hose are all that has do be undone to remove the rear. You don't have to worry about "ABS " - just cut the wires off the sensors and forget about 'em (or remove the sensors altogether, as I did). The reluctor rings don't get in the way of anything, but if they bother you you can simply use the axle shafts out of your Cougar rear (again, as I did, but only because the TC axles were worn). You'll need to upgrade your M/C and prop valve regardless of which disc brake setup you use. Swap the whole TC rear end in and you get the added bonus of 3.55 or 3.73 gears, too :D

Those 10.5" discs in that swap kit - are they solid or vented? TC rear rotors are vented

OK. I know the TC rear will bolt right in. If I could find a TC rear around here that wasn't complete  I would have done that already. the only ones I've found local would have to be completely rebuilt before I would trust them.

The 10.5s in the kit are vented and available drilled and/or slotted.

The M/C and prop valve is already being changed since I'm upgrading the fronts as well.

Also, this might sound crazy but I want to keep the 3.08 gears I have.

I'm also seeing here that this kit is available for 8.8" small bearing rears.

Buy a T/c rear and swap all the stuff off it then? Backing plates, mounts, calipers.... Just swap it then sell the rear to someone else? Or one better, just swap your 3.08's into the T/c rear after it's installed

He can't just buy a TC rear and swap all the stuff into his existing one - TC rear housings are shorter (but the axles are the same length) than regular Fox BirdCat rear housings. TC axles stick WAY out of the housing to make room for the ABS stuff, and the brake hardware (splash shield, caliper mounts, calipers, rotors) are all set up for the axle sticking out that far.

Mayhem: The only way to be 100% sure that the Cougar brakes are different (or the same) as Mustang ones would be to check part numbers for the drums, shoes and backing plates. If the Cougar and Mustang ones are the same that kit just might work.

The kit is from SSBC. http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com/

They don't have an individual page for the the kit. I actually found it in the Jegs catalog.

Sent them an e-mail, waiting to hear.
