Engine Tech / Fan Clutch
Back about 20 years ago or so, my fan clutch went up in my 87 3.8L Cougar.  The odd part was the symptoms were backward to me.  The engine temperature was fine at idle and low speeds but started to climb at higher speeds.  But a replacement fan clutch fixed it.  20 years later, same symptoms.  Sanity check: when these fail, does that seem logical?

Misc Tech / Who knows tools?
I need to find an extremely thin #2 Phillips ratchet to remove this screw.... unless I'm tackling this the wrong way. I want to remove the mirror housing from the mount upon which it sits. The screw ratchets, or whatever they're called, that I have are too tall to squeeze between the mirror and the housing. Has anyone done this? It's a mirror from an 80s Town Car. The mirrors and attachment methods are probably similar to Cadillacs and others from the 70s and 80s.

Events & Shows / Philly, DC, Harrisburg, Baltimore, Allentown
There's nine of us that have put a pin on the map. If there are any other folks that you know of that live in this region, we could have the potential of a really nice gathering one Saturday this summer. If it's just the nine of us, that is still potential for a nice gathering if everyone shows up. Just kind of loosely estimating, it looks as though Shrewsbury, PA or a little further south maybe in pen 15eysville for Bleavitt23 is a midpoint from the farthest members of that cluster thus far. (Trying to estimate a mid-point between Jandmmustangs, Bleavitt23, KITZ KAT and Fordracer08. The rest of us fall within that perimeter that their locations create.)  If everyone is game for putting something together, we could determine who can commit and select a mid-point and find a park near that location and fire up the grille and that sort of thing.

If we expand the perimeter out a little bit to include the folks on Long Island, the location would probably be near Philadelphia or Wilmington.  The drive would be longer for those at the bookends but if everyone felt they still had the time for longer drives in both directions, we could have an even larger gathering.

Events & Shows / Let's meet in the middle
Is there some sort of map that shows pins of members' locations for those that have entered them?

Do the masses here feel it is feasible and worth the effort on creating a customizable map that uses zip codes or towns to place a pin on a map for those who wish to contribute?  Some sort of map that would either be created by a volunteer based on members contributing or something that members could populate on their own.

The goal here is to see where we have heavier concentrations of members to perhaps have a better chance of regional gatherings.  For instance, there may be several members near Indianapolis so those members out there could use a map to see how many there are out there and select a location most central to those members.  But for those near Philadelphia, they could use a map showing pins in/around Philly to see if there are enough members around there to see if it's plausible for a gathering near there.

Something like this has been brought up in there  past but I don't know if anything came of it or if it was something that was reasonably achievable without someone having to commit loads of time.

Anyone concerned about privacy or OPSEC or whatever can not post any zip or choose a neighboring zip code to at least have something that would suffice on figuring a general location for meets based on ballpark estimates of folks' locations without those folks having to be accurate or even revealing their actual zip code or town.

Run-ons, I know but I don't have the time to go back and polish.  Hopefully the message gets relayed without the refined language to relay it.

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Don't drill without being absolutely sure what's on the other side
I always avoid drilling to the maximum extent.  I will exhaust numerous man hours to cirspoogevent drilling, cutting or anything permanent to achieve the best quality execution or installation of something rather than taking short cuts unless I have committed to the modification and have thought all the consequences of the change through.  For instance, using a hole saw for coach lamps using regular emblems and thin lexan (http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?922-Coach-light-mod&highlight=coach+light) is an example where cutting and drilling is part of the mod.  But mounting an amp or CD changer in the trunk for instance can often be achieved without drilling or cutting.

I just bought another car recently (not Fox) and the first item on my list is replacing the gas tank because it was leaking and I suspected heavy rust inside.  Well, come to find out it was in fact leaking and although heavily rusted inside, the rust wasn't the reason for the leak.  Some asshat in the car's past had installed an aftermarket stereo amplifier in the trunk and used long self tapping screws to secure the amp inside the trunk.  You guessed it by now, they ran screws straight into the gas tank.  That could have gone very, very wrong at that moment but since it didn't, the previous owner went 12 years (based on stereo work receipts that came among many other receipts with the car) with an occasional gas smell and gas leak whenever he filled up (screw holes were at the top).

If you or anyone in your family takes any vehicles to a "professional" stereo shop, please be sure to discuss if/where they plan on drilling or discuss options to avoid drilling all together.

By the way, I found an incredible price on Amazon for a replacement tank from Spectra.
