I bought a boat recently (because I need ANOTHER project! :hick:), and joined a forum that supports that boat manufacturer. Actually, I bought the boat, and noticed the next day that the forum was down for what ended up being a month and am now going on 10 days waiting for my account to be approved by the admin. The admin does a fundraiser each year to keep the forum alive. Boat manufacturer had financial difficulties, quit financially supporting the forum, and eventually went bankrupt. It looks to be 1/8th the size of this one, and yet they fundraise $875 or so each year to keep the forum going. It's uses phpbb software.
It looks like our forum is ~$250 a year, yet is 8 times larger. How the heck is it costing them $875 a year?!
I dunno, that seems kinda expensive to me. And here I thought the ~$250/yr for this forum was expensive...
Yeah, a forum I admin costs $100yr for hosting with customer service. It's webwiz and sized in between this forum and the boat one.
Not sure if my first post after getting authenticated should be "where be the monies?!" hah
I ran a forum with phpbb software. $110 a year.....
Seems about right. $875 per year better be a GIGANTIC money generating website.....
phpbb is free, i think there is paid support.
but as a platform its free.
hosting for a small forum *can* be cheap.
$100-$150 would cover most inc domain name renewal
Admin gave a cost breakdown:
$35 per month hosting = $420 per year
$40 per month admin = $480 per year
I asked what the fee for 'admin' is. Hopefully it isn't the admin paying himself...
One of the admins runs a hosting service. Hmm... Still prodding. Hopefully they don't ban me.
