f-150 aod?

my 88 bird has a blown aod, could I feasibly pick one from a late 80's f150 and use it? Looking for column shift alternatives. kinda want to keep the sleeper look going on this one. I say kinda. More like Im dying to drive the  out of this car sometime soon.

The F-150 AOD *might* be the longer tailshaft version. You'd have to measure to be sure.

I think they are longer as well. the panther chassi cars also have them and also have a shorter yoke, which should be the same style. they might be short enough you can just swap yokes and get away without swapping the tail shaft. id mesure first though.

id just throw a t-5 at it. i haven't had good luck with aod's. ill bet i could do a t-5 swap in an afternoon after doing one now.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

I swapped in a T5 in place of the 4 speed that was in my first Mustang...took me 3 hours. That was pulling the old, swapping flywheels, AND having to modify the clutch cable, as I didn't think to grab it from the donor car, which was an '87-'93 car, as the ends are different, etc.

Anywho, I started on it at 12 noon, and drove it to work at 4, and had time for a shower after the swap. Compared to changing the TH400 in my old J truck, it was a walk in the park...

I got my aod from an 89 station wagon, the only problem I ran into was the transmission lines had different fitting so I had to go back and cut a short section from the station wagon and splice them into my existing lines.

I got an AOD from a lincoln that had a longer tailshaft. (I think it was 13inch instead of 11 inch)  This was years ago so i'm not sure the length.  On the front of the driveshaft yoke I took a chop saw and shortened it by a couple of inches.  Worked fine for many years.  I even used the shortened version of my drive shaft for the T5 when I got that.  I literally just changed the yoke last week when my driveshaft rear u joint failed.

I think the F150 actually had the E4OD. That's what was in my '95...

Yeah E40d and AODE came in the trucks later on but between 80-87 i believe they came with c6's and aod's and possibly c4's i had a 86 with an aod in it thats why im curious to the swap-ability. It might just come down to honey, youre learning to drive stick lol

any aod should work, with the f150 you might have to drop the pan and swap out the shift linkage, just unscrew the nut and pull the little pin out and it comes right out.

I put an aod from an 86 tbird into a 1980 f100 no problem, so why would a truck tranny be longer than a car? yes lincolns are about an inch longer but the slop is taken up in the driveshaft, so no problem! an aod is an aod, like I said, you may have to deal with the linkage or lines but other than that its a go!
