#%!$$!ing Problem

I noticed that Thunder Chicken has posted that cyber sitters have attacked his website... and I think I may have contracted some disease. I have had the problem for some time now (bout 3 months)but, have been working around it. It is just driving me bat shiznit crazy trying to get rid of the issue.

I have a HP Pavilion dv1000 Laptop running XP and every time that I google, yahoo, ask jeeves any topic and click on the searched links it directs me to some other website....it's not even the same site everytime.
This shiznit is killing me. Usually I am pretty decent at finding these issues but, this cookie (may not even be a cookie) is a . I have wiped temp internet files, removed programs, uninstalled IE and installed Mozilla, went from Mozilla back to IE and then to Chrome. :punchballs: The problem seems to stay no matter what I do. Please Help!!! Where do I go from here before I slick the entire HD and reinstall just to get rid of the issue? Oh and Norton finds nothing wrong.....any surprise there?

Hi Lightningbird, not sure what programs you may have used to clean this issue, or if you're doing it manually.  I've had problems like this before and have used Spybot Search & Destroy to rid my computer of the malicious  that attached itself and cleans the registry as well.  Its a free program with no limitations that comes highly recommended and operates on all OS.  Hope this helps.

Backup your important files and programs, wipe out the drive and start over.  Make  sure you install a firewall program.  BTW viruses LOVE Internet Explorer.  I just recently started using Firefox.  I dig it!

My ex-wife's machine was subject to one of these "drive by's" after my daughter went to some "free" Manga viewing sites (there is no such thing as "free" when it comes to Asian-based sites). She was experiencing the exact same redirects that you are when she used a search engine. Her machine was so badly infected that I had to install the anti-spyware programs in safe-mode while disconnected from the internet as the spyware has become so sophisticated that it prevents you from installing anti-spyware programs to kill it!!!

I was able to get her machine back up and running without having to do a reformat and reinstall of windows. It may actually take longer to clean the machine than start over again depending on whether you have a legal copy of Windows and any software you've installed available. If you have a lot invested in the machine as it is, I can post the procedure. Basically it involves first running SuperAntiSpyware (with some specific settings), then Malwarebytes. Then you run the HijackThis program & look at the logs to ensure you've removed the infecting malware. If you're lucky, you can extract the offending spyware and keep using your machine. My ex hasn't had an issue since I cleaned it up.

Note that old standby's like Spybot & Adaware were not able to clean up these infections. Apparently the vicious attackers over in China (they appear to be in China based on my router logging) have figured out how to thwart the "usual" programs. Personally, I think these people pose a bigger threat to this country than a nuclear bomb and all of these hackers should be executed for all the lost productivity they've already caused, never mind the security breaches they're committing as we speak. Just my humble opinion though

Edit, oh and I started using Firefox as well, IE is a hackers paradise - I'll never do anything important on IE ever again.

Not only that; they've found ways to target those programs directly.

Yep, I specifically could not run the install programs or, even if I could get them installed, when I ran them, they would show as "running" but not be visible on the screen. Mother#@$#@ ass-#@#@s!!! I really want to strangle one (or a dozen) of those little shaging weasels :beatyoass: Anyway, that's why the specific programs and order of running them is important in the procedure I used. Using "safe mode" and disconnecting from the internet also helps get around these devious programs.

go on the firefox website and get all of the security add-ons.  like they say its the safest web browser you can use.  the most important app/add on to get is "no-script" or something like that.  you can be very selective to what runs in your browser.  if you have an old pc that is horridly slow b/c of flash based adverts, it'll make your browsing experience faster b/c it wont load flash stuff unless you allow it to.  it helps on a REALLY slow computer.

just go through all of the security add ons, you dont need all of them, but they have some of the best.

To amend and add to some of the previous posts, one time my machine got infected...it wouldn't even let me access a site to download an anti-spyware program.

I use Avast for protection, and spybot for the other nasty shiznit.

Also..if you look at puppies very much...you'll get stuff too. :flame:
