Engine Tech / t3/t4 upgrade
hi all,

within the next year or so, I'd like to upgrade from a T3 to a T3/T4 50trim turbo in my 87 TC.

has anyone upgraded to a T3/T4 that uses an internal waste gate?  Are there any modifications that need to be made?

Thanks!

Misc Tech / blower motor replacement
hi all,

does anyone happen to know the motorcraft part number for the blower motor for manual heat controls (unsure if that matters) in an 87 TC?  mine needs replacing and I'd prefer to stick with motorcraft if they're available and not too crazy on price.  I've used off brand blower motors in the past in my buick I had and they were loud as all hell!

thanks!

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / torque box reinforcements - $55 shipped
Torque Box Reinforcement plates with the inside plates and the required hardware for mounting!

These torque box reinforcements were custom designed by Heath and test fitted on an 86 & 87 Cougar and an 87 Tbird. The passenger side box that goes under the car is marked as "PS". The interior plates are not side specific. We recommend welding and bolting these in. These should prevent your torque boxes from tearing. Both the inside and outside boxes have been primered to prevent flash rust.

Suspension/Steering / front end alignment
hi all,

I'm due for a front end alignment after replacing the L & R inner & outer tie rods & struts on my 87 TC...what are some good alignment specs I should be shooting for when I take my car to the alignment shop?

My car has the following in terms of setup/suspension (don't know if all of this info is really necessary but I'll list it anyways):

18in front wheels (I believe 235/40/18 tires up front)
MOOG inner & outer tie rods
96-98 SN95 spindles
Steeda X2 ball joints
Koni STR.T struts
Maximum Motorsports Caster/Camber plates
The car is lowered slightly.  I don't know what springs were used and by how much the car was lowered as all of that was done by a previous owner

thanks!

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / chuck w shock brackets - $55 shipped
here's another kudos to Chuck W for opening up his design to us to use!

I needed a set of these for my own turbo coupe so I had quite a few of these made to help out anyone who needs a set!  I currently only have 7 sets that are welded up and ready to be sold!

$65 shipped.  Paypal friends & family or add a few bucks to cover fees!  Comes with mounting bolts, washers and nuts.

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / chuck w seat braces for subframe connectors - $70 shipped
first, kudos to Chuck W for open sourcing his design!

I had 20 sets of these made.  They're made from 11 gauge steel - the guy who cut and bent them for me had an abundance of 11 gauge steel available.  The small radius cut next to the notch in the one seat brace denotes that it's for the passenger side.

$70 shipped via USPS priority mail.  Paypal friends & family or add a few bucks for fees!

Engine Tech / 3G alternator upgrade with many pics - 87 turbo coupe
My car is heavily modified by a previous owner.  Within that long list of modifications was the swap from the factory power steering to manual steering.  Well, manual steering absolutely sucks when you live in a town with small streets and have to park the car inside a garage that's just barely big enough for the car itself and nothing else...

I'm not able to reinstall the factory power steering without removing and redoing the top half of my engine, which I'm not willing to do.  What I am going to do is have a friend install an electric power steering unit and ECU from a 2004-2009 Toyota Prius - this is a very popular mod for older cars, especially the mustangs.  With that in mind, I thought it was best to upgrade the alternator so it didn't burn up anything from the extra load of the power steering unit.

I followed this guide: http://turbotbird.com/techinfo/3G%20Alternator/G3%20Alternator%20Install.htm

While it's a pretty good guide, it has almost no photos.  I'm not a mechanic so I prefer to do as much research and see as many photos as possible before I start modifying anything.  I took as many photos as possible during my process.  Please note that since my engine and engine bay have been heavily modded, some of this stuff will not apply for most people and their 87-88 TC.

this is my set up prior to removing the old alternator:

old alternator removed:

here's my new regulator plug spliced into the factory wiring.  I picked this up on ebay for I believe $13-14 shipped to my door.  I liked this new plug because it already has the stator wire pinned to the connector so you only need to splice 2 wires rather than 3.

here's the yellow wire that runs along side the original power wire that goes into the large splice:

cut and spliced in with a new 10 gauge power wire:

here's the new 3G alternator installed with new wire loom:

Suspension/Steering / has anyone installed an EPS system in a TC?
One of the previous owners of my car spent a lot of time and money working under the hood of my '87 TC.  One of the things that was removed in the process was the entire power steering system.  My car currently has manual steering....and it sucks.  The one positive is that getting rid of all of that power steering equipment really makes my engine compartment looks very clean.

Speaking with Shawn (Tbird232ci), he's thinking an EPS system (electric power steering) could be installed so I don't clutter up my engine compartment.  has anyone installed an EPS system in a thunderbird or TC yet?

Body/Appearance/Interior / power seat motors
hi all,

all of my power seat options seem to work except my rear tilt...when you push the button forward, you can hear it doing something but when you push the button backwards, nothing at all happens (I'm going off memory at the moment).  being that I'm 6'2", I definitely need to get this fixed to make the car more enjoyable to drive!

rather than buying a new motor on ebay (they do exist!), I'm going to try calling around to a few junk yards to see what they have.  my question is: what make/model/year car can I have them pull a motor from that'll be a direct fit and function for my '87 TC?

thanks!

Electrical Tech / no interior lights
none of my interior lights work (dome, vanity, etc.) - not when you open any of the doors, nor when you use the switch on the dash to force the lights to come on.

where should I start with trying to troubleshoot this issue?  I'm a bit of a car newbie..

thanks!

Electrical Tech / rearview mirror auto dim wiring
hi all,

the rearview mirror on my TC fell off of the windshield prior to me buying the car.  the mirror itself is in rough shape and needs to be replaced.  I don't really care about the auto dim feature personally, but I would like to know if its power is being shared with anything else and whether or not it needs to be hooked back up.  currently the wiring for that is tucked up under the headliner.

if the wiring isn't sharing any power, I'm going to throw on a $11 or $12 mirror I grabbed on amazon!

User Rides / my new red '87 turbo coupe
hi all,

I've taken a long hiatus from older cars since my last '87 & '85 TC that I had in 2010 and 2008.

Here's my new red, '87 TC that I picked up earlier today:

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / odd question..can someone measure their 87-88 TC's width and length?
I'm looking at purchasing another TC, but in order for me to do so, I need to make sure it'll fit inside my garage as I intend on the car being a project that I'll work on over the years until I get it how I want it.

Can someone please measure their TC from left mirror to right mirror and from the front to the rear or provide a link that already has these details?!

thanks!
