Suspension/Steering / Re: Interchangeable struts?
Quote from: Chuck W
The TBird shocks are 3" longer than a Mustang ones extended.  Even lowered you cannot get them to work...at least not properly.

Do you know how the compressed lengths of the Tbird/Mustang shock compare?
I've read of people using Mustang coilovers/shocks but either relocating the upper or lower mount to keep things kosher. I wouldn't want to lose ~3 inches of suspension travel though. (Assuming the compressed length is the same)

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Comments on Yakima/Thule/Saris roof racks wanted
I've grown tired of my trunk mounted bike rack messing up the paint and trying to stuff a wheelless bicycle into the rear seat of my T-bird.
I looked online and found Yakima, Thule, and Saris roof racks fit my car. Does anybody have one of these racks? If so, can you give me your impressions of them? i.e. wind noise, fit, etc.

Engine Swapping / Re: EFI 300 I6 plus twin turbos (long post)
Two good books for turbocharger knowledge are Maximum Boost by Corky Bell, and Turbochargers by Hugh MacInnes.
I've found turbomustangs.com and the turbomustangs forums to have good info too. I don't think you'll find much info about turbo I-300s, but most of the turbo info isn't platform specific.
Turbocalc is a good program to visualize how your engine fits with different turbochargers. I found that several of the maps can be off by 5-10% though. I built my own spreadsheet to correct those errors, but it has never been vetted by an independent source.

I'm told a pair of smaller turbos vs. one large turbo will spool up quickly but run out of steam at high revs. Well, I'm not looking to build for high revs. I really wouldn't care if this engine never saw anything above 5000 RPM.

Don't listen to those people. As long as you design the system right, two turbos will work just fine. So will one. Seeing as you have and inline and want a highway cruiser, I would think one turbo would be the choice. The cost/fabrication/maintenance savings of a single more than offsets the small performance increase of the twin.

Engine Tech / Re: Electric fan question....
The most popular electric fans over on the corral are the Mark VIII, Taurus/Sable/Continental, Thunderbird/Cougar, SN95, Ramcharger, and Spal.
The Mark VIII and Thunderbird fans pull the most CFM. They both use the same shroud and fan diameter but have different motors. The 93-96 Mark VIII fans have a steeper fan pitch, which keep its rpms down compared to later Mark VIII fans and the Thunderbird fans. The downside to this is that the later Mark VIII/Thunderbird fans are more efficient once you place a radiator upstream of the fan. Link The MarkVIII/Tbird fan shrouds must be trimmed and the radiator must be repositioned in order to fit with a V8. All of the other fans fit without modifications unless you have a supercharger.
As mentioned before, get a DC Control unit. It costs more than a relay or two, but negates the need for a 130A alternator and will prolong fan life. FYI, the 3516 is a Taurus fan and the 3018 is a Thunderbird fan. Many people think the 3018 is a Mark VIII, but it isn't.
The black magic is another option, but it has a bad reputation for not doing its job and ping out at the most inopportune times.

Junkyard list:

Mark VIII  '93-'98 4.6 (V)
Thunderbird/Cougar  '94-'97 3.8/4.6 (4/W)
Taurus/Sable '89-'95 3.8 (4)
Continental '90-'94 3.8 (4)

Archive & Library (Read Only) / Re: Alternator upgrade for pre '88 3.8L?
I did some looking around and compiled a list of alternators with the offset mounting. Ford part GL-469 is probably my best bet. It is a 95A. It came on:

89-90 Taurus/Sable w/2.5L
91 Tempo/Topaz w/2.3L
91-93 Thunderbird/Cougar w/5.0L

There are also some 95A/130A alternators that can be found on E/F series trucks. The complete list is here

it works on the 88.

What works on the '88? I believe the '88 3.8 has mounting points 180 degrees apart. The pre '88 alternators have a mounting point at 12 o'clock and ~5 o'clock.

[Slight hijack] I'm doing this so I can put a Mark VIII fan in. No doubt the 60/65 amp alternator I have now can't handle it, even with a DC Control unit.

Archive & Library (Read Only) / Alternator upgrade for pre '88 3.8L?
I'm interested in upgrading my alternator but haven't found many products. The pre '88 3.8s have the old school mounting brackets that don't work with standard 3G cases.

Above is a 95A model from PA-Performance. Link. Anyone else have any ideas?

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars WANTED / Re: A/C and PS Accessory Brackets for 3.8L
I got them this morning. I was expecting a lot of searching, but I found two sets with the 6P148 compressor at the first junkyard. $20 for the brackets. I ended up paying $50 for a compressor though. I just needed the manifolds because the compressors from Advance/Autozone come without them. A/C work is quite expensive to do "right". I'll probably end up spending ~$450 after all is said and done. New compressor w/clutch, new suction/discharge/liquid hoses.
