General Computer Forum / Re: Dell Computers
if Dell is still going with the lcd's they have been for years, it should be a Samsung. Some of their products are nice. Myself, I have a Dell rebadged Sony G520. $180. Good stuff.

and if I ever had a lcd with a backlight die, or find one, it'll just be the next lcd to be built into a projector. Svga projector at 90" (room isn't big enough for a longer throw distance), with $30 bulbs that last 10,000+ hours, for $300 is hard to beat :D

dell can have some really good deals...it was hard to beat dell systems (without monitor/speakers) with top of the line processors/video/good amount of ram for $300 or so it was at times. A lot of people buy the "hot deal" dell systems and use the parts in their own builds since they can save a hundred or two getting the parts that way.

What brand of lcd? If its samsung or an equivalent brand, great price on the system. The videocard will bring down the rest of your system if you game at ALL though. Its their new budget card. I keep seeing it compared to the FX5200 and that card was slower than the geforce 4 Ti's.

"and even a real honest-to-goodness-legal copy of Windows XP"
heh, if its Pro, thats a good $150USD or so there...really jacks up the price. Don't think nirvanagod can compete ;)

Let us know how it runs and if dell includes a bunch of bloatware from the factory. It may be a good idea to just wipe the system and reinstall windows (as long as they actually include the bare OS cd with the system)

General Computer Forum / Re: Car computer ebay deal
The screensize isn't bad considering its native resolution is most likely vga or wvga. From more than a foot away, text would have to be enlarged. Who needs to use it while driving anyways?

There are many ways to use harddrives in areas with a lot of movement. A common one is mounting it, or the entire computer, in a box with rubber/bungee type cables making the computer "float". DIY or commercial. My dad had to deal with this when he was looking into making his recording studio more mobile. Its effective and works well.

I'd never use plexiglas for a computer case, indoors or not. Who needs to see their computer anyways? (and I hate the fact that its almost impossible to find decent cases without windows now)

User Rides / Re: Lots of new pics
you really like the drivers side of your car, don't you? :p

My favorite is the 3rd post, second picture because the lights look less "white". Could use a higher angle though.

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Re: So THAT was what all the fuss was about?!

its nice to have a project to work on.  I could imagine that id be right there with ya if it were one piece at at a time restoration.
these cars are getting crused daily and it makes me wonder how many of them are left.

wonder if DMV could query that info?

Around here I see them all the time. Some days I see up to 10 83-88 tbirds themselves, along with almost the same number of cougars. Newer tbirds, I see them every few minutes. This is with 40-45 minutes of driving total a day. More time, the numbers increase. I envy all the TC's I see around though...they always look top notch (compared to the 87 v8's or v6's I see which seem to all have had poor body upkeep - looks like they've never been waxed)

Looks like I have replacement parts for years to come :p

some things have worked fine for hundreds of years, why should they be changed now? That's my only overall opinion about law changes. I'm sure there are many people who could do a better job though - people who weren't born in the US

(although some changes made in the 20th century were way overdue, mainly human rights issues)

You know, I've never looked at the interior of one of those but I must say that the entire dash/console looks very sleek...and how it blends in with the door panels...

Lounge / Re: This board is awesome!!!
yeah, most boards do have maturity problems. You have to remember though that most of those people that act like that are young and still need to learn some valuable life lessons (such as the world not revolving around them ;)  ). The way this board runs probably also helps keep it running in the way it does. If some teenager comes in here, and is the type who would be a smart***on other boards, and notices how everyone acts around here, he/she is more likely to follow along with how everything else is flowing. This includes showing actual respect to other members.

I'm sure this holds true to the other age ranges as well, but you can't deny that teenagers have the most free time to be surfing the net and are the reason some boards have maturity issues.

Lounge / Re: Election Day: Who's gonna take it all?
Kerry's now behind by only 7 electoral votes, up from ~50 behind an hour ago

edit:
well looks like bush got 5 more votes. I'm sure new mexico will go for bush also, they just fit in with all the other states who voted for bush betwen the west coast and the northeast. Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ohio look to be the last ones we're waiting on

General Computer Forum / Re: Win XP SP2 problems
heh, I hate all norton products. Ever since some version of Utilities six years ago that killed my computer when it wanted to fix a "problem", I haven't bothered since. I currently use NOD32 for antivirus, spybot for spyware, and I'm back to zonealarm 4.0 after many small conflicts with other firewalls and ZA5 (can no longer disable the Nagle algorithm in TCP/IP)

From your question, other programs may find things spybot doesn't or fix problems more permanently...I had a problem with spyware a week ago (fresh install of windows, limited programs installed) and a day after I had spybot fix it, it was back (and I didn't use the system for anything other than coming to this board and one other). I don't know how well spysweeper works but it could be worth checking out if you notice spybot having problems permanently clearing out a certain type of spyware. There's one I had before that wouldn't leave regardless of what I tried, reboot after reboot. Adaware deleted it just fine.
