LEADS on T-Bird/Cougar Stuff For Sale / '86 Cougar GS with Unusual Modifications
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/3360583620.html

Listed as XR-7 but is clearly a GS with an XR-7 front bumper. I wouldn't call it loaded (as most sellers are likely to do) as it isn't equipped with illuminated entry, cornering lamps, keyless, etc.

Appears to have dealer-installed parts but they chose to retain the original wheels. I suspect it was customized when it was new and then put in storage.

Front good; rear bad. :fart:

Lounge / Who is near Richmond, OH?
I was driving through the area today and saw a black '87-'88 Turbo Coupe with black Bullitt wheels. It was parked on Rt. 43 just outside of Richmond.

It looked familiar. :fart:

Lounge / Photos - Vintage Grand Prix (56k Warning)
Every summer since 1982, the city of Pittsburgh has held an event in one of the city's parks to benefit the Autism Society. It's called the Vintage Grand Prix and consists of a series of races on a city street-based track as well as an enormous car show.

I took the following photos (minus the air-shot of the golf course).

LEADS on T-Bird/Cougar Stuff For Sale / One Strange Cat on eBay
First of all, this dude claims it has the HO 5.0 from the factory because it was owned by a detective. The upper plenum tells me it's the stock SO 5.0.

With that said, check out the options. Keyless, illuminated entry, auto lamp, disco dash, and no cruise? Notice the non-cruise steering wheel.

That's one strange cat.

Lounge / Blown Transmission...
...in my nitromethane R/C car.

I have a Traxxas Jato 3.3 R/C car, which can run 0-60 in less than five seconds and reach a top speed of 65 mph, depending on tire diameter. I've owned it for several years and I've gone through plenty of tires, half shafts, control arms and other small items. I never thought I would blow the transmission (two speed auto) on this car, but I did it today.

The car would no longer move under its own power, so I thought the primary clutch had failed or spun a bearing. When the clutch checked out, I had a bad vibe about the transmission or the differential.

Upon removal and tear-down, I discovered that the primary input gear had a fracture which let loose a guide pin. This guide pin mixed around in the transmission and effectively destroyed the output gear and the differential gear, in addition to chewing up the chassis where the rear diff meets up with it.

It's not really relevant to our cars, but technically interesting for some people. This is an expensive hobby, so it's likely that this car is going to sit in a box for at least a month or two.

The first image shows the guide pin next to the fracture in the input gear. The last image is of the rear carrier, which was rebuilt last fall with new spider gears, c-clips, oil and gaskets.

Body/Appearance/Interior / Chrome Wheels - Removing Chrome
The Cobras are quickly circling the drain. I ran them all winter, as did the previous owner. The PA road salt just eats things alive here. The chrome was flaking off from the inside area of the wheel, but now it has spread to the visible areas - around the lug holes, valve stem, bead.
I can get one more summer out of them, but they will simply look trashy after that.

With that said, can I media/sand blast these wheels to remove the chrome and have them powdercoated?

The chrome on the outside surface is way thicker than the chrome that's flaking off on the inside. I looked closely where it's lifting around the valve stem and it seems to be an easy .015-.025 thick. I could physically remove it with pliers, for example.

Lounge / Fitness club shooting - 10 minutes from my house
This is some scary stuff:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/08/05/pennsylvania.gym.shooting/index.html

Compared to other major cities, Pittsburgh is actually pretty small. I didn't think there were any serious violent crimes when I moved here, but this year has been turbulent.
Several police officers were shot and killed this past spring in Stanton Heights, which is less than 10 minutes from where I live.

I can't fathom how unstable you would have to be to go out and kill people. I'm glad I have a kick-ass alarm system at the house.

User Rides / MN12 Update ►
After five years of ownership with the '96, I've decided to start fooling around with it. I did some minor things before, and I've had four sets of wheels on it.

I found a set of Cobra wheels in the MN12 bolt pattern for $200 during the winter. Plus, they were local so I didn't have to drop the coin for shipping.
I'm aware that the Cobra wheels are overdone, and I did have something else in mind, but I couldn't pass up the deal I got on the wheels. Plus, I got the full set of lugs and centercaps.

I got a great deal on the tires, which I purchased last weekend. The brand is spoogeho and they are 255/50/17 (I now refer to them as "the meats"), and they fit very well with no modifications required. I'm running custom-machined spacers up front, which helps them clear the top of the spindle.
I think these tires are as large as you can go with this chassis. I wanted tires big enough to fill out the wheel wells, but I couldn't lower the car; that would have catastrophic results here in Pittsburgh.

The chrome is flaking on the inside surfaces of the wheels, so I'll have to do something about that. The other plans include suspension and brake upgrades, as well as repainting a lot of small parts in the wheel wells... now that everything can be seen.
