manual computer with aod

I have an aod in my 88 xr-7 and will be doing the HO speed density conversion with an 88 stang manual computer. Correct me if I am wrong but is it true that you can use a manual computer with auto transmission without the check engine light but using an auto computer with a manual transmission will not work?

From what I have heard it will work, but not well.  A manuel trans engine computer delivers less fuel at idle because their is virtually no load when in neutral or with the clutch disengaged then an auto where the engine must constantly spin the TQ and input shaft, pump,  etc... of the trans.

mercougar50 possibly brings up a good point about the fuel curves at idle, guess I'll have to stick my spare A9L in for my A9P and see. But remember this, once the EEC is in closed loop the air/fuel ratio is determined by o2 sensor information.

As far as the check engine light, it will work just fine. I've run my auto computer in a stick Mustang, no problem. Have also had the stick computer in my Bird, just to see if it worked(but not on a long term basis).

TurboCoupe50, when you in installed the manual computer in your Turbo Coupe, did it run alright or was it unnacceptable? The car is parked with no motor so I won't know if its going to work until I try to start the motor for the first time......That is a nice T-bird, do you have any other pictures posted of it?

I just tried the A9L long enough to verify that it is OK. It did have some cold idle surge, but the A9P EEC surges in cold weather as well.

As far as picts, here are a few I've taken over the last couple of years. UMMM looks like my providers server is down, links will work sooner or later.

Using a manual spec EEC in an Auto equipped car will cause driveability issues. You can use an auto spec EEC in a manual car though, just not the other way around. I suggest you get the correct EEC if you plan on keeping the Auto trans.

I've been running a manual eec in my 87 with a 91 HO&aod for 6 years and have yet to have any computer related idle or driveability issues.  Once I had idle surge but it went away with new battery terminals, clean ground on the engine block (beside oil filter)and a larger ground strap from the battery to the body (beside washer bottle fill). I have heard that the manual computer has more aggressive fuel and timing curves to go with the improved performance of a 5-spd but I have never run mine at the strip with an auto eec to measure any real world difference.
