View Full Version : C5 transmission slack

The cougar is a 86 with a 3.8L and C5 automatic with 68,000 total miles. Trans has been drained and filter replaced. The car drives well. The car when put into Park has noticeable slack in it allowing the car when on uneven surfaces to move once the brake is released.
What might the problem be and any remedies ?

well how far does it move, because on all my cars, the slide alittle bit before they lock.

It's all in their design... think of those hydraulic car lifts. There's a gap between each lock as it goes up, once it reaches the desired height it slides down to the closest lock for safety. That's all the tranmission is doing... sliding into the next lock when you put it in park.

Checked movement over several times. Movement varied from very little to a maximum of 4 to 6 inches. Also, encountered problem infrequently where car won't start, nothing even the engine won't even turn over, unless you move the column shifter.

4 to 6 inches is about right. Some of my cars will move more then that. Worse comes to worse, set your foot e brake. I'll bet that the linkages to the shifter are just messed up.

Thanks. I'll consider using spray libricant on linkages to help with the starting issue.
