View Full Version : Signs of AOD on its way out?

Just figured i'd see if there were any for-telling signs that an AOD transmission is on it's way out. I kinda had an odd experiance this morning in that my tranny would shift out 1st or 2nd (pretty sure it was 1st). I was simply driving along doing 25mph-ish and running at 2000-3000k rpm's. I got it to go away by manuallly shifting from a stop down into 1st, then 2nd at around 15mph then back into drive at around 30-35ish. Didn't have the problem again after that. Just curious as to exactly how concerned I should be about this. Not positive but I think I heard a vaccum-ish his when I first put it into reverse this morning (but I was still half asleep so i'm not sure). Could this be related to my lack of cruise control, or low/cold fluid, or a vaccum type issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'm not looking forward to replacing the transmission anytime soon. :shoothead

Just a quickie update. Car sat all day at work, got in it took off, and shifted fine. One time prob maybe?

mileage on the car,, and last fluid/filter change?
you wont have any vac leaks associated with shifting at all if your tranny is stock.
you wont have a vac modulator if its stock.

Mileage is around 110k-ish, last filter and fluid change happened twice cause I replaced the pan and I guess the shifter input shaft seal was leaking. That was about this time last year. Oh this is also the second tranny to be in this car, first one gave up the ghost about 2-3 years ago, so I don't think the car mileage and tranny mileage are concurrent with one another. I'm not sure as to the mileage of the tranny that's in there, I think it was a junkyard pick.

Assuming you've already checked the TV cable connection at the thottle body? If so, it does sound like a filter/fluid change may help.

I've checked the TV cable and it seemed secure and properly located. As for the fluid change, it got done last year twice within about maybe less than 2 weeks of each other. I don't think i've even put 10k on the odometer since it's been done.

My cougar recently had fits with its aod. It would shift from first to third and had no O/D. After a fluid and filter change and a bottle of lucas it just started working again all by itself. But it took like 60 miles for it to happen.
