What type of tranny do I have???

Hello,
I have an 86 Cougar with a 3.8 (CFI) and after we changed the back brakes and went to reverse to let the self adjusters do their thing, I heard a loud CLUNK and my reverse went out- it is no more. Anyways my question is what type of tranny do I have an AOD or C5 or C6 if you can't answer without label numbers or something where do I look to find the type? The information on the door is illegible so that won't work. Any information will be greatly appreciated. :rollin:

Look on the gear indicator on the dashboard. If you see P-R-N-D-2-1 it's a C5. If you see P-R-N-(D)-D-1 it's an AOD.

the id tag should be mounted on the driver side extention to tranny housing bolt. (one of them i should say)

you probably have an AOD

the good news is you can just about fit anything you want on there ,, just hunt down a ford from the late 70's up through the late 80's coudl be trusted.

my 87 coug has a 1981 LTD aod tranny.
i just had to swap out the minor linkages but thats it.
